Horley is a good base to use to visit South East England.

LONDON

  

You can reach London by rail from Horley station or Gatwick Airport station and the journey takes approximately 35 minutes. The sites worth visiting are too many to list here, but you might like to try:

BRIGHTON & THE SOUTH COAST

Brighton is just 30 minutes away by rail or road. There you can spend a pleasant day walking round the 'Lanes' with their Antique shops, or just wander along the seafront.

HISTORY ON YOUR DOORSTEP

There are a number of historical attractions around Horley. Here are just a few:

  • Hever Castle - the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, tragic queen of King Henry VIII. Begun in the 13th century, it was converted into a comfortable Tudor house
  • Arundel Castle - The seat of The Dukes of Norfolk and set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens
  • Leeds Castle - set on two islands on the River Len in the heart of Kent, has been home to royalty, lords and ladies for more than 900 years. ...
  • Windsor Castle - the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and is QueenElizabeth's favourite weekend home.
  • Hampton Court Palace  - was originally built for Cardinal Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII, circa 1514.  it was returned to the Crown in 1529.
  • Chartwell [former residence of Winston Churchill]
  • Ashdown Forest [made famous by A A Milne's books of 'Winnie the Pooh'.  Lots of lovely walks around the forest.

  • Wisley Gardens - The Royal Horticultural Society's garden at Wisley, is one of the three most visited paid gardens in England
  • Polesden Lacey – a Regency country house with renowned Edwardian interiors and gardens, set in beautiful downland countryside
  • Nymans Garden – a Sussex Weald garden famous for its beauty & collection of rare plants was developed in the 20th century by the Messel family.
  • Scotney Castle Garden - one of England's most romantic gardens designed in the Picturesque style around the ruins of a 14th-century moated castle, set in a beautiful wooded estate

HORSE-RACING

Lingfield Racecourse is within easy travelling distance of Horley - Flat, National Hunt and All Weather Racing are available at one of the busiest racecourses in Europe.

If you enjoy greyhound racing there is a very popular track in Brighton 30 minutes away where you can enjoy dinner overlooking the track.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS

On the first Sunday in November, the London to Brighton Vintage Car Rally takes place. Just along at the end of the road you can observe these old vehicles on their way to Brighton. Passengers in the vehicles are very often dressed up in Victoriana!

FURTHER AFIELD – some places involve a drive but can be seen in a day:

Stonehenge – 5,000 year old monument is part of the World Heritage site set near Salisbury in Wiltshire.

Bath – visit Bath and its restored Roman Baths. Visit the Victorian Royal Crescent houses and many other historical sites in the city, built on the river Avon. Another world heritage site!

Channel Tunnel – it is possible to take a day trip over to Calais via the Channel Tunnel; a return ticket with up to four passengers and a car costs approximately £44.
